"Praise You" by Fatboy Slim
First of all, when I watch the video without doing any research, I clearly understand that the important thing is how people express themselves. It is clear that people are dancing around because they want to dance, regardless of the strange looks and the security guard (I’ve learned that he was not a real actor, it become spontaneously because this music video call “Guerilla-style” and this was not a legal way to shoot. This detail is very interesting I think).
Although the dances may seem ridiculous and funny, I think the video is important and worthwhile, the video is taken with a really low budget, without any productions, even in a way that can be called amateurish, the video can be more resonant than many professional videos. Clothes and age groups are quite different, people's reactions are inconsistent, but no one cares about their comments. The lyrics of the song are understood accordingly. Obviously, after searching the song and the video clip, I actually realized that the lyrics have another meaning.
As a result of my research about this video, this song is originally said by Camille Yarbrough and this was directed by Spike Jonze with Roman Coppola. Camille, a black woman, writes this in a defensive tone and style about racism, but can be completely different with Fatboy Slim and Spike Jonze. For this music video, it was called a parody of a real choreography. In the video, Spike Jonze, under the pseudonym 'Richard Koufey', also directed the video. This video would actually be the official video of Rockafeller Skank, but it couldn't be done. But Norman Cook wanted to apply this video to Praise You. The interesting thing is Norman Cook wasn't aware of Spike Jonze, he was actually a dancer in the video. People dancing here were called "The Torrance Community Dance Group". The video had to be done before the live audience as it was for Rockafeller Skank. The thing is that people can "praise" himself / herself. I think Fatboy Slim reflects this fact very well in his own way.
From my perspective, the only difference I see between this video and the other Rockafeller Skank video is the place. What is important in both videos is how people express themselves, behaving irregularly and indiscriminately, and even using the same clothes, will not care about anyone. In addition, the video has received three important awards. I think it's a production that shows that you can be successful with a low budget and technological limitations like low quality cameras.
